New program offers COVID-19 psychological first aid to community members
Axis Health System (AHS) is offering a new mental health resource: the Community Counseling Assistance Program (CCP). This program is a partnership with CDPHE’s Colorado Spirit and FEMA to help people in La Plata, Archuleta, Montezuma, Dolores and San Juan counties who have been impacted by COVID-19. CCP services are free and can help people who are feeling overwhelmed, burned out or stressed. CCP uses psychological first aid to help meet people’s immediate needs, connect them to local and state resources, teach healthy coping methods and help build resilience and hope. The CCP team offers individual, family and group support and provides services to businesses, schools, healthcare organizations, nursing homes, assisted living residents and more.
“We are here to serve anyone and everyone,” said K.D. Bryant, Licensed Professional Counselor and CCP Team Lead. “The beautiful thing about this program is that there are no age restrictions. It doesn’t matter if you’re 2 or 92; we are here to help you process through COVID-19. For some people, that support might be listening to their concerns and teaching coping skills. For others, it might be connecting them to resources because they lost their job and need to know what supports they have.”
“This pandemic has touched so many people, and it’s important to know that whatever you’re feeling is right for you. No one’s experience is exactly the same as someone else’s. Our main goal is to help you feel safe, calm, connected and hopeful,” said Shea Anderson, CCP Community Counselor. “Just like how people who experience physical trauma get first aid, so should people who have mental trauma. That’s why we’re here. Let us help you heal.”
